Leimbach cemetery
The Leimbach cemetery is a cemetery in the south of the city of Zurich . It is located on the outskirts of the Leimbach district . It was opened in 1972, making it the youngest cemetery in the city of Zurich.
history
The new cemetery in Leimbach from 1972 replaces its predecessor, which existed since 1883 and can still be recognized today as a square lawn, which is bordered by a thuja hedge, on Zwirnerstrasse . Since a building boom set in in Leimbach after the Second World War , the cemetery, which had become too small, had to be continued at another location. The first preliminary studies began in 1946, but these were not finalized until the 1960s. Between 1965 and 1966, architect Robert Barro planned the buildings. After the referendum for the cemetery in 1968, the cemetery was realized between 1969 and 1972. The architect was Erwin Rentschler, the construction management of the cemetery was in the hands of Henry Perrin.
Area and buildings
The Leimbach cemetery is located on Stotzstrasse and forms the end of a valley-mountain axis that leads from the Leimbach train station via the Catholic church Maria-Hilf and the Reformed church Leimbach to the cemetery. The cemetery complex, which is small by Zurich standards, covers 17,407 m² and is accessed by a geometrically laid out serpentine . This leads from the entrance via the cemetery building with abdication chapel, burial room and office to the upper part of the complex located at the edge of the forest. The planting of the area is based on the near edge of the forest and gives the impression of a natural area.
Specialty
In addition to the Hönggerberg cemetery, the Leimbach cemetery is the only one in the city of Zurich that has an ash burial area in the neighboring forest area.
