Friedrich Wolf Medal

The Friedrich Wolf Medal was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was donated on February 5, 1988 in one step by the Council of Ministers of the GDR through its chairman Willi Stoph . It served to recognize special achievements in health education and health education as well as the improvement of preventive health protection. Also for the promotion of international cooperation in the fields of health education and preventive health protection. The medal itself could be awarded to individuals as well as groups of up to 10 people, but only once. With the award of the medal, the entrusted received a certificate and a bonus which was 1,500 marks for individuals and 500 marks for collectives. When awarded to collectives, each collective member received a medal and a certificate.

Authorization to propose

The following group of people were entitled to make proposals:

  • President of the National Committee for Health Education of the GDR,
  • Federal Executive of the FDGB,
  • President of the DRK of the GDR,
  • President of URANIA,
  • Ministers and heads of other central state organs,
  • Chair of the District Councils,
  • President of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR,
  • Director General of SDAG Wismut and the
  • Head of the institutions subordinate to the Minister of Health.

The proposals were then to be submitted to the Ministry of Health by August 1st of the current year. However, the final decision was made by the Minister of Health himself. The award ceremony took place every year on December 11th, Health Care Day. However, only 10 medals could be awarded to individuals and 5 to collectives annually.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze medal with a diameter of 30 mm shows the portrait of Friedrich Wolf on its obverse, which is enclosed by the inscription: FRIEDRICH WOLF (above) and his life dates 1888–1953 (below). The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the large state coat of arms of the GDR in the middle. The medal was worn on a blue covered clasp, on which a white side stripe was woven on the left upper side of the chest. The interim clasp corresponds to the same design.
