Graves in Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery

The Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery in Fromelles , France is the first after a break of 50 years in 2009 by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission -scale military cemetery .

The cemetery is on a natural hill, which means that its cross can also be seen from the VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial . 250 soldiers who died in the Battle of Fromelles on July 19 and 20, 1916 were buried in the cemetery on the outskirts . Research by the Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division had confirmed evidence of a mass grave on the edge of the Bois Faisan (Pheasant Wood) in 2008. The grave was excavated by archaeologists from Oxford University between May and September 2009 and the cemetery was laid about 120 m from it.

The remains of 250 soldiers were found, of whom 96 Australians could be identified by name after extensive investigations and DNA analyzes. 109 could be identified as Australian and 3 as British soldiers; 42 dead could not be identified in any way. Investigations continue to be conducted to determine the identity of the remaining dead; this process will continue until at least 2014.

The cemetery was formally opened on July 19, 2010, the 94th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles .
