The Frontiers Journal Series are scientific open access - journals that are published by the Frontiers Media SA, a company based in the Swiss Lausanne .

history

Frontiers was founded in 2007 as a non-profit organization by neuroscientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) . From 2008 the project was continued as a commercial company Frontiers Media SA.

The business model provides that scientists publish their articles for a fee. The journals ensure compliance with scientific standards and make accepted articles generally available on the Internet free of charge. The scientific editors and reviewers who assess the quality of the manuscripts work free of charge. The first journal published online was Frontiers in Neuroscience in 2007 . Over time, other journals on medical and scientific subjects were added. In addition, Frontiers Research Topics is published , in which - analogous to special editions of specialist journals - several articles appear on a specific research topic. Publication fees are usually in the range of around $ 2,000 to $ 3,000.

In 2013 the Nature Publishing Group (NPG) acquired shares in Frontiers Media SA. NPG is part of the Holtzbrinck publishing group .

criticism

In 2015, the scientific editors of the journals Frontiers in Medicine and Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine were suspended after complaining about corporate employees meddling in their decisions and violating the principles of medical publication.

In 2015, Jeffrey Beall's Frontiers Journal Series was added to his list of possible predatory open-access publishers .

In a contribution to the 2018 anthology, Pseudoscience: The Conspiracy Against Science , Jeffrey Beall reported that Frontiers had used in-house software that did not allow peer reviewers of manuscripts submitted for publication to recommend that a manuscript be rejected. The publishing systems are set up in such a way that it is almost impossible to reject manuscripts.
