Fruit flies

Two families of flies (suborder Brachycera ) are known under the term fruit flies in German usage :

  • the Drosophilidae ( fruit flies , also called fruit or vinegar flies) with the representative Drosophila melanogaster , which is world-famous as a biological research object, and the particularly common pest, also known as cherry vinegar fly (introduced from Southeast Asia to Europe in 2009)
  • the Tephritidae (also called drill flies )
