Fukushima-ku ( Japanese 福島 区 ) is one of 24 boroughs ( ku ) in Osaka , Japan . The district is mostly residential, but also includes some office buildings, a business district and some industrial plants. The Yodo River forms the northern and the Dōjima the southern border of the district.
history
The municipality was created on April 1, 1943 from parts of Kita-ku , Konohana-ku and Nishiyodogawa-ku . On September 1, 1975, the districts within the district were reorganized. They are today: Ebie ( 海 老江 ), Fukushima ( 福島 ), Noda ( 野 田 ), Ōhiraki ( 大 開 ), Sagisu ( 鷺 洲 ), Tamagawa ( 玉川 ) and Yoshino ( 吉野 ).
The Fukushima district was a farming village close to the city during the Edo period . Large factories were built in the Meiji period , mainly in the textile industry. The Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. was founded here in 1918. Numerous printing companies and automotive suppliers still work in this district today. Before the Second World War, the University Hospital and Osaka Central Market were also located here.
In recent years, a number of new residential high-rises and office buildings have been built due to the proximity to the Umeda and Dōjima business centers. Other parts of Fukushima have been converted from factory sites into residential and commercial areas. Among other things, the Hotarumachi residential and office complex was built on the site of the former university clinic.
