The funicular around 1900

The Funiculaire du Mont Royal (English Mount Royal Funicular ) was a funicular in Montreal that led to the Mont Royal . The valley station was on Avenue Duluth, near the George-Etienne-Cartier monument , the mountain station at a viewing terrace near the 233-meter-high summit.

In 1876, Frederick Law Olmsted laid out the Parc du Mont-Royal on Montreal's local mountain . It was very important to him that the park should only be accessible on foot. But after just a few years there was a demand for more convenient access. Finally, in 1884, a funicular was built. It was powered by a steam engine in the valley station. For safety reasons, the funicular was shut down in 1918 and canceled two years later.
