Function-oriented development

The term function-oriented development comes from the field of mechatronic system development in automotive engineering , but is a relevant topic for all product development disciplines.

In contrast to component-oriented development , it describes a cross-domain and continuous development process. So-called customer experience functions are derived from a customer request and broken down step by step to the level of technical implementation. The development process must go through several intermediate levels, such as a level of logical functions.

This is to ensure that the development of all mechatronic components is coordinated with one another and that they function as an overall system.

The background to the functional orientation in the automotive industry is the explosively more complex mechatronic interrelationships (view of the control units) due to the increased use of information technology , which, in connection with shorter innovation cycles, are increasingly difficult to master.

The developers expect the function- oriented development to produce products that meet the actual customer needs to a greater extent and at the same time are characterized by high cost / benefit efficiency.
