The feed master is responsible for the procurement, storage, preservation and preparation of feed. At the same time, they ensure compliance with hygiene regulations, monitor the feeding facilities and monitor the animals' feed intake. The feed masters check the feed for composition, consistency, appearance and smell. They determine the feed rations according to quantity and composition, taking into account breeding and husbandry goals and the age of the animals.

The main areas of application of forage masters are farms with large animal husbandry, game enclosures, zoological gardens and stud farms.

The profession of forage master, the forage master, can practice animal keepers, horse hosts, animal farmers with a completed vocational training and specialized further training in Germany.

The GDR feed master was propagated in the GDR in the early 1960s to improve feed management in the LPG .

The German farmer newspaper of March 31, 1961 justified this propagation of the forage master as follows: "Because we can no longer get any further in the village, in all LPGs without qualified guidance. The forage master will help." This action was an indication that there had been serious grievances in the GDR with the utilization of feed in the LPG.
