Feed quotient

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In animal production, the feed quotient is a measure of the efficiency in converting feed mass to increase body mass.

Feed quotient [-] = ingested feed [kg] / increment [kg]

Animals that have a low FQ are efficient feed users. Sheep and cattle need more than 8 kg of feed for 1 kg of live weight. The pig industry claims to have an FQ of 2.69 to 3.0. (1) Atlantic salmon apparently have a very good FQ, around 1.2.

To achieve sustainable animal protein production , an FQ of 1.0 is required.
