The Gößnitz-Geraer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was a railway company in what is now Thuringia . She was the owner and operator of the Gößnitz – Gera railway line .

history

The Gößnitz-Geraer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft, founded in 1863, established the first rail connection between the Duchy of Saxony-Altenburg and the Principality of Reuss Younger Line and its residential city of Gera . At the same time, the industrial cities of Schmölln and Ronneburg, which belong to Saxony-Altenburg and where the company was based, were to be opened up.

The line was opened on December 28, 1865; it began at Gößnitz station on the Saxon state railway line from Leipzig to Hof, which runs here in the Pleiße valley. In a westerly direction, after 35 kilometers, it reached the town of Gera on the White Elster, which at the time only had a rail link with Weißenfels.

The company achieved satisfactory income in the first few years of its operation, especially from freight transport. However, when, after about ten years, new railway lines were built, which withdrew large parts of the freight volume from the line, the company decided to enter into sales negotiations with the Royal Saxon State Railways .
