Göttingen Newspaper

The Göttinger Zeitung (GZ) was a local daily newspaper for the city and the district of Göttingen . It was founded in 1864 by the Hofer brothers, who owned a printing company in Göttingen. Initially it was the newspaper with the highest circulation in southern Lower Saxony and competed with the Göttinger Tageblatt, founded in 1889, during the German Empire . At the time of the Weimar Republic, the Göttinger Zeitung tried to be factual and objective and to refrain from party-political propaganda, but remained politically an advocate of liberal politics. In the course of the radicalization of the Göttingen population, which was mostly nationalist, the Göttinger Zeitung lost massive subscribers until 1932. After the seizure of power and the DC circuit of the press by the Nazis was Göttingen newspaper for economic and political reasons threat of closure and in 1935 bought by the Göttinger Tageblatt.
