Günter Siegmund

Günter Siegmund (born December 19, 1936 in Küstrin ) is a former German heavyweight amateur boxer (+ 81 kg). He won bronze medals at the 1960 Olympic Games and the 1961 European Championships.

Boxing career

Günter Siegmund trained at ASK Vorwärts Berlin and was GDR heavyweight champion in 1960 and 1961. In 1957, 1959 and 1963 he reached third place.

At the 1st International GDR Army Championships in September 1958, he only failed in the semi-finals against Andrei Abramov from the Soviet Union and thus won the bronze medal.

At the European Championships in Lucerne in 1959 , he was defeated by the later bronze medalist Władysław Jędrzejewski from Poland. At the 14th European Championships in Belgrade in 1961 , he won the bronze medal. By winning points against the Briton Billy Walker, he made it to the semi-finals, where he was finally defeated by the Italian Benito Penna.

He won another bronze medal at the 17th Summer Olympics in Rome in 1960 , where he knocked out the Swiss Max Bösiger and defeated the two-time Romanian Olympian Vasile Mariuţan 5-0 on points, before he defeated the South African Daan Bekker 1: 4 in the semifinals Lost points.
