Georg Schwechten (born February 4, 1827 Stolzenau, † August 19, 1902 Berlin) was one of the great Berlin piano makers from the second half of the 19th century. Original, well-preserved or restored Schwechten pianos and grand pianos are still considered exemplary for their time and are rare.

Today the brand name is used by the Chinese company Shanghai Piano Company SPC Ltd. (founded 1895) used.

history

Georg Schwechten took over the workshop for table pianos founded by his older brother Heinrich Schwechten (1812–1871) in 1841 in Berlin at Kochstrasse 11 in 1853 and founded the G. Schwechten company in 1853 with his younger brother Wilhelm (around 1833–1900). In 1861 he had a factory built at Kochstrasse 60 and then also acquired the neighboring properties. The company's pianos soon gained a great reputation. G. Schwechten made a great contribution to the development of pianinos . After his death, the parent company was taken over by his daughter Anna Maria Clara Fiebelkorn, nee. Schwechten, who had the Schwechtenhaus built for the company. Wilhelm's sons Friedrich and Wilhelm (1880–1954) Schwechten founded the Schwechten & Boes piano factory in 1910, from 1911 Gebr. Schwechten, from 1912 Friedrich Schwechten (Wilhelmstrasse 118). In 1918 both bought back the parent company. The sale was initially located on Kochstrasse, but was later merged with production at Frankfurter Allee 32. In 1921 they had their own concert hall, the Schwechtensaal , built in Berlin-Tiergarten.
