GNU Chess is one of the oldest chess programs for Unix and has been ported to many other platforms . It was one of the first parts of the GNU project started in 1984 .
The first version of GNU Chess was written by Stuart Cracraft, all others up to and including version 4 by John Stanback. Version 5 (1998–1999) was completely redesigned by Chua Kong-Sian. Version 6, released in April 2011, is based on the source code of version 2.1 of the Fruit program published by Fabien Letouzey .
GNU Chess is free software and is under the GNU General Public License . It is mainly used together with the XBoard front end .
