GNU FreeFont is a family of free, open source fonts from the GNU Project that are licensed under the GNU GPL . The family consists of FreeMono , FreeSans , and FreeSerif .
The aim is to cover the Universal Coded Character Set (UCS) as completely as possible . The project was started in 2002 by Primož Peterlin. Today's maintainer is Steve White.

The collection began with a donation from URW Software & Type . Support for many other languages was added later.
The current version was published on May 3, 2012.
