The class Star was a series of broad gauge - steam locomotives with the wheel arrangement 1A1 for express trains of the Great Western Railway .

The Star series was supplied by Robert Stephenson for the Great Western Railway between 1838 and 1842 at the instigation of Sir Daniel Gooch . It was the forerunner and model for the GWR class Firefly designed by Gooch himself .

The entire series was decommissioned between April 1864 and September 1871.

A replica made in 1923 is on display at the Swindon Steam Railway Museum .
