The Firefly was the first steam locomotive series designed by Sir Daniel Gooch for the Great Western Railway. It was first built in 1840 based on the tried and tested Star GWR class supplied by Stephenson . As a result, 61 more machines of this type were manufactured. In comparative drives, the Ixion belonging to this series proved capable of higher speeds than its standard gauge competitors.

From 1865 the Firefly class was assigned to the Priam Class . The entire series was decommissioned between December 1863 and July 1879 .

A full-size, operational replica of the Firefly has been on display at the Didcot Railway Center since 2005 , where it can travel on a short stretch of broad-gauge line.
