Gala Abu Ahmed was a Kushite fortress in the lower Wadi Howar in northern Sudan .

The 120 × 180 m facility is located 110 km west of the Nile . The fortress was discovered in 1984 by archaeologists from the University of Cologne. Since August 2008, the facility has been researched as part of the DFG project “At the Limits of Power”. Gala Abu Ahmed dates to the Napatan phase (approx. 750-350 BC) of the Kushite Empire. Individual C14 data suggest that the fortress was built in the pre-Japanese period, in the 12th century BC. Was used. The function of the structure is still unclear. A function as a guarded caravan station with customs and control functions seems likely due to the location with a vegetation island on a trade route to inner Africa.
