Galdogob or Goldogob is a small town in the Mudug region in central Somalia , between Gaalkacyo and the border with the Ethiopian Somali region . It is the capital of the Galdogob district.

history

In 1982 Galdogob came under the control of the SSDF in a military offensive by Ethiopia and the rebel organization Somali Democratic Redemption Front (SSDF) against the authoritarian Somali government under Siad Barre .

population

At the end of 2002 Galdogob had around 20,000-30,000 inhabitants - townspeople and nomads - and showed strong growth. 25–35% of the city's population were impoverished ranchers who moved to the city as a result of a 1998/1999 drought; of 1250 households surveyed, over 70% had come to the city since 2000, the most common reason for moving (66.3% of those surveyed) was the insecurity in other areas (see Somali civil war ).

In the entire district, around 5% of the population were townspeople and 95% were nomads who had close economic ties to the Haud area.

economy

Most of the residents were dependent on livestock for food and income. An estimated 30% of Galdogob residents were in casual work and had no regular source of income.

Galdogob and the surrounding villages are supplied with water through two boreholes in the center of the city that were drilled in the 1960s by the then Water Development Agency and through seasonal berkads . In 2002 UNICEF renovated the two boreholes.
