Gallen porthole

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gallen Bullaun ( Irish Bullán Ghailinne ) is a Bullaun in Ferbane in County Offaly in Ireland . It is located opposite the buildings of the “Gallen Priory Nursing Home” in the middle of the destroyed chapel of the Welsh missionary St. Canoc.

The large boulder, which is 1.86 m long and 0.85 m wide, is surrounded by gravel, at the level of the original chapel floor. The porthole has a diameter of 0.45 m and a depth of 0.15 m and a deep circumferential groove in the side surface.

The original purpose of the bullauns is not really known, but they have an undeniable connection with the water and the worship of the Brigid . The ritual uses of the bullauns continued into Christian times and many have been found in association with early churches, most in Glendalough , County Wicklow .
