Gallus Schmid

Gallus Schmid (born January 26, 1902 in Götzis ; † August 29, 1977 there ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and embroidery manufacturer. He was mayor of Götzis and from 1959 to 1964 a member of the Vorarlberg state parliament .

education and profession

Schmid attended an embroidery school after primary school in Götzis and worked in his parents' business until 1913. He then worked from 1933 to 1941 as a master embroiderer at the Drexel brothers in Hohenems before fighting in World War II from 1941. He was only able to return from Yugoslav captivity in December 1948. From 1949 Schmid was a partner and managing director of the Schmid Brothers Embroidery and Weaving Company.

Politics and functions

After his return from the war, Schmid joined the Austrian People's Party and the Economic Association and in 1950 became a member of the Götzis municipal council. From 1955 to August 1958 he held the office of deputy mayor and directed the fortunes of Götzis municipality between September 1958 and March 1970 as mayor. He was also chairman of the land exchange, hunting, personnel and road, water and building committee, chairman of the local school council, chairman of the building committee and vice chairman in other committees. As a member of the Feldkirch constituency, he represented the ÖVP in the state parliament between October 29, 1959 and October 28, 1964. There he was also a member of the Agriculture Committee and from March 1963 a member of the Education Committee.

Within the party, Schmid was active at local level as the local party chairman of ÖVP Götzis, and from 1957 he was also chairman of the economic association. He was also a member of the state party leadership of the ÖVP Vorarlberg and a member of the state party council of the ÖVP Vorarlberg. Schmid was also involved as a member of the Götzis Liedertafel, was a board member of the Raiffeisenkasse Götzis and co-founder of the Rhine Valley section of the VATC. In addition, from 1949 he held the office of chairman of the Götzis gymnastics club, was involved as a member of the Götzis Comradeship Association and was vice-president and president of the Vorarlberg municipal association from 1962 to 1969.

Private

Schmid was the son of the sticker Franz Josef Schmid (1863–1903) and his wife Theresa Schmid, née Elsässer (1867–1936). He was married to Maria Waibel (1909–2002) from 1939 and had a son and a daughter.
