Gallop changer

Conductor's bag with canter changer

Manually operated coin changers are referred to as gallop changers or quick changers . Devices that the conductor wears in front of his chest are also called breast changers .

Alfred Krauth developed and patented the canter changer.

nature

Gallop changers consist of four to six metal or plastic tubes for the different coin values, each of which has an insertion slot at the top and a lever mechanism at the bottom which releases a coin when operated . There are also versions with a second lever per tube that releases several coins at the same time. This simplifies the counting of change.

use

From the 1920s on, conductors used canter bags attached to the shoulder bags when handling passengers. Later they were also used as stationary at the conductor's seat .

Since the changeover to one-man operation , canter changers have mainly been used as an interchangeable insert for the payment table at the driver's seat of a tram or a bus . They are still used by conductors today at major events with increased numbers of people in local public transport or when traveling in historical vehicles.
