history

The term cookshop comes from the 17th century. At this time, food stalls opened in many German cities, in which simple and, above all, inexpensive meals were cooked for the poor part of the population. Later the term cookshop was frowned upon and the cookshops gave themselves more attractive names. The food stall in Leutenberg, however, stayed true to its name, as it was linked to the company's 350-year tradition.

On May 7, 1800, the food stall burned down in a city fire. A new building was built on the old foundations. In another city fire in 1865, the house was spared. Only a few houses in the street burned down and so the opportunity arose to design the ensemble of market fountain, market, market stairs, town church and Friedensburg. In 1882 Heinrich Hermann Schmidt bought the house from the old Unbehaun to the right of the gate. In 1914 the butcher's shop was opened in the cookshop. During the times of socialism this had to be leased to the consumer cooperative . In 1937 Johann Karl Schmidt bought the neighboring house, had it torn down and rebuilt it as a hotel together with the old cookshop.

Today the cookshop is Germany's only hotel with a grotto . According to the expert opinion, the air in the rock grotto is 6.7 times cleaner than clear, fresh winter air when the snow cover is closed. Allergy and asthma sufferers can undergo breathing therapy here .
