Gasthaus zum Schatten

The Gasthaus zum Schatten , today the Waldhotel Schatten , in Magstadter Strasse 2-4 in Stuttgart-Vaihingen is an old restaurant.

The original house dates from 1783 and is now a listed building. A second inn of the same name, in which the literary shadowy circle to which Ludwig Uhland belonged, met, was in downtown Stuttgart; the two places, however, probably had nothing to do with each other.

Around 1900 the inn was shown on postcards together with the Bärenschlössle . Later, less emphasis was placed on the rural idyll, but the location of the house directly on the S-curve of the Solitude race track was placed in the foreground. Several racing drivers spent the night in the “shade”. Items from this period can still be seen in the solitude bar of the house. Today the “shadow” is mainly used as the relexa Waldhotel Schatten for meetings.
