Interior

The Gasthuiskerk is a late Gothic parish church in Middelburg , the capital of the Dutch province of Zeeland .

history

The Gasthuiskerk (Gasthuis Dutch for hospital) was originally built as a chapel for the St. Barbara Hospital in Middelburg in 1493/94. In the course of the Reformation , the chapel was no longer needed by the hospital and was used by English traders for church services from 1579 to 1589, after which Calvinist services were held in it. In 1798 the sacred building was handed over to the Roman Catholic believers in Middelburg, who used it until 1846. In 1867, the buildings of the former St. Barbara Hospital were demolished, and the Gasthuiskerk was almost completely demolished. The chapel has been the parish church of the local parish of Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerken since 1936 .
