Pilosocereus glaucochrous is a species of plant in the genus Pilosocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet glaucochrous means 'blue colored, blue frosted'.

description

Pilosocereus glaucochrous grows tree-like, only slightly branching with a clearly developed trunk and reaches heights of 3 to 5 meters. The often ajar, blue-green to gray-green, glaucous shoots appear silvery and have a diameter of 3 to 7 centimeters. There are 5 to 10 ribs with transverse furrows. The blackish felted areoles covered with white hair sit on low, rounded humps. The golden yellow to gray thorns are translucent when young . The ascending 2 to 5 central spines are 2 to 4 inches long. The 7 to 14 radial spines, mostly spread out and resting on the surface of the shoots, are 8 to 15 millimeters long. A part of the shoots capable of flowering is not or only very slightly developed and is located near the tip of the shoot or slightly below.

The wide open, tubular, white flowers are flesh pink to reddish on the outside. They are 4 to 5.2 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters. The depressed spherical fruits tear open laterally and contain a more or less purple-colored pulp.

Systematics, distribution and threat

Pilosocereus glaucochrous is widespread in northeastern Brazil in the higher elevations of the caatinga vegetation.

Pilosocereus glaucochrous was in the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN in 2002 as " Near Threatened (NT) , d". H. low risk, classified. In 2013 the species is known as " Least Concern (LC) ", i. H. listed as not endangered.
