Ronald Stewart Byles

Ronald Stewart Byles ( 1923 - 1989 ) was a British cactus collector. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Byles ".

Live and act

Ronald Byles was one of the first members of the London branch of the National Cactus & Succulent Society , which existed from 1945 to 1982 , one of the two forerunners of today's British Cactus and Succulent Society . For many years, as its chairman, he was responsible for organizing numerous exhibitions, including the 1953 meeting of the International Organization for Succulent Research in London. In 1956 Byles became a member of this society. In the early 1960s, he withdrew from all activities of the cactus and succulent society for reasons unknown.

Byles' series of articles A Dictionary of Genera and Subgenera of Cactaceae , published in the National Cactus and Succulent Journal from 1954 to 1956 , was published in book form in 1957. Together with his childhood friend Gordon Douglas Rowley , he established the genus Pilosocereus .

The cactus species Pygmaeocereus bylesianus (Syn .: Arthrocereus bylesianus ) was named after Ronald Byles .
