Palatal arch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The palate arches ( Arcus palatini ) are two arcade-shaped folds of the mucous membrane that extend from the soft palate ( Velum palatinum ). The palatal arches play a major role in the gag reflex .

Posterior and anterior palatal arches
  • The posterior arch of the palate (1) extends from the soft palate to the throat ( pharynx ) and is called the arcus palatopharyngeus .
  • The anterior palatal arch (2) runs from the soft palate to the side of the base of the tongue (tongue, Greek glossa ) and is also referred to as the arcus palatoglossus .

The palatine tonsil ( tonsilla palatina ) is located in the niche between the two palatal arches . After the palatal arch injury, an open nasal problem can occur.
