Otto Haeckel (* 1872; † 1945) and Georg Haeckel (* 1873; † 1942) were among the most famous press photographers in Berlin around 1900.

Live and act

The Haeckel brothers achieved something completely new to date: they were able to photograph motion sequences with very short shutter speeds of up to a thousandth of a second.

The brothers grew up in Sprottau in Silesia, and around 1905 they left their homeland to work for BZ am Mittag and the Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung .

They also founded a "press illustration company" (around 1908). In addition to their work as press photographers, they also worked for the nobility and the emperor. In addition, countless photos were taken that illustrate everyday life in Berlin. They prove that the city offered people from countless cultures a home even in this period.

The brothers documented their surroundings in such detail that around 200,000 pictures were taken during their work. However, many of the recordings were destroyed in World War II.

The entire estate of Otto and Georg Haeckel lies with the ullstein bild picture agency . There are around 16,000 glass plates and 11,000 photos. Part of the Haeckel project at 'ullstein bild' is a corresponding thematic website. A selection of the photos appeared in an illustrated book by Sutton Verlag, “Everyday Life in Berlin”, photos by the Haeckel brothers.
