history

Before Johann Georg Crüwell was officially listed as a tobacco manufacturer for the first time in 1705, the family was already active in the trade in spices and tobacco .

When Arnold Crüwell joined the company in 1870 , the rise from a regional company to one of the leading smoking tobacco manufacturers in Germany began.

On September 30, 1944, the company's successful development came to an abrupt end. In a bomb attack, the entire production facilities of the company, now run by Arnold Crüwell's son-in-law, Richard Mitzlaff-Crüwell, were destroyed.

After rebuilding production, however, the company faced a completely different problem: the rise of the cigarette. The change in smoking habits and the company's late reaction to it ultimately led to its own production being abandoned in 1983. However, the company still exists in the form of a tobacco shop, making it the oldest tobacco factory in the world that still exists.

The Crüwell properties are now rented for other purposes.
