Secret cabinet

The Secret Cabinet ( Gabinetto Segreto ) refers to part of the exhibits in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples . These are found objects from Roman antiquity , all of which depict erotic motifs. Most of the finds come from Pompeii .

The found objects are paintings, frescoes, vases, sculptures and even erotic furnishings such as an oil lamp in the shape of a phallus . On the basis of a specially established taxonomy , it was possible to distinguish between pornographic and non- pornographic finds. From 1821 the collection was not accessible to the public at all or only to a limited extent.
