The Yellow-brown fallow beetle ( Rhizotrogus aestivus ) is a beetle from the family of scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae).

features

The yellow-brown colored beetles have a body length of 12 to 18 millimeters and have the typical appearance of the scarab beetle . The wing covers ( elytres ) are dark brown at the seam, the sides and at the rear edge. The base of the pronotum is clearly lined. The 10-part sensors have a 3-part fan.

Occurrence and habitat

The yellow-brown curl beetle occurs in the western Palearctic (large parts of Europe). In Northern Europe (British Isles, Scandinavia, Baltic States) the beetle species is absent. Their distribution area extends to Asia Minor and the Caucasus . In Germany the species is considered "endangered" (red list - level 3). The heat-loving beetle species prefers dry slopes, semi-arid grasslands, sandy floodplains, fallow areas and clearings as their habitat.

Way of life

The beetles fly from early April to June. The mostly crepuscular beetles are often found on oaks ( Quercus ). The grubs feed on the roots of various plants and need 2-3 years for their development.

The yellow brown curl beetle flies at the time when the great horseshoe bats are feeding again after their hibernation. In this critical time for the bats, when the females are also pregnant, this beetle species is an important source of food.
