To give away money is a German docu-soap that was broadcast Monday to Friday from November 17, 2008 to December 30, 2008 on the private broadcaster VOX .

The focus was on the idea of giving a school class the opportunity to help people in need, families or non-profit organizations with an amount of 5000 euros .

content

The content of the broadcast was that a school class was first selected and this had to name 3 students from their community. These 3 “chosen ones” were sent out to listen to the story of a person or a family with whom fate was not well meant. For this purpose, the victims were visited by the students in their home towns and were able to spend a few hours with them. After the individual meetings, the three were encouraged to share the story of the suffering of their interlocutors with their classmates with the help of video material and words. Based on this demonstration and the reports, the weight of the problems of the individual protagonists was now openly discussed within the class. The final decision, however, was left to the three selected students after the discussion. Independently of their classmates, they now had to vote on the final result in a separate room. Finally, the result was presented to the class and the “victorious” pupil was allowed to present his “protégé” with the good news and of course the 5000 euros.

success

After two weeks of broadcasting in the noon program (3:05 p.m.), Vox pulled the emergency brake and from week three moved the program to a slot in the night program (from 4:00 a.m.). The broadcaster reacted to the miserable ratings of the first 10 episodes. With a negative viewer number of 220,000 from episode 7 and a market share of 3.8%, which corresponds to about half the average of the Vox broadcasters, the show was no longer acceptable. After 33 episodes, the docu-soap disappeared entirely from the station's program.

criticism

In connection with the broadcast, the broadcaster and the production were confronted with criticism from viewers for making quota with the help of people in distressing situations. In addition, the question was discussed whether the production of the show took place within the actual school time of the young people.
