General Capitol Guatemala

The Capitanía General de Guatemala ( Spanish Capitanía General de Guatemala ) (1568-1821) was an administrative unit within the viceroyalty of New Spain during the Spanish colonial period .

It included the present-day states of Guatemala , Belize , Honduras , El Salvador , Nicaragua and Costa Rica as well as the Mexican state of Chiapas . Parts of the Caribbean coast (Belize, Miskito coast ) were not really under Spanish control; the Miskito coast was claimed by the viceroyalty of New Granada.

After the War of Independence, the area was briefly part of Mexico. After the end of the First Mexican Empire in 1823, the area split off as the Central American Confederation . Only Chiapas remained with Mexico.
