General march

A general march has been a military march played on a drum in German-speaking countries since the 18th century . This originally acted as a signal to the troops to prepare for an imminent departure from the garrison or a field camp . In the 19th century , the function of the general march changed and it became an alarm signal with which the members of the troops were ordered to collect quickly at predetermined assembly points.

In military terms, the general march was not played, but beaten .
