Genna (sports)

Genna ( Amharic ገና ) is a form of hockey game and is traditionally played around the time of the Ethiopian Christmas ( January 7th ). Genna actually means Christmas . The number of players is not limited, the teams are usually recruited from two villages. The goal is always the territory of the opposing village. The players use curved pieces of wood ( t'ing ) and a wooden, but now often plastic, ball ( irur ).
