The beginnings

The Geographische Gesellschaft Bern was founded on May 15, 1873 in Bern. The initiator and founding president Professor Albert Schaffter (1823-1897) left Bern two years later with the aim of building a new life in Tennessee as a farmer and head of a missionary institution. Under the direction of Hermann Siegfried , Head of the Federal Topographical Bureau and then under Professor Theophil Studer , under Government Councilor (and later Nobel Peace Prize Laureate ) Albert Gobat and under Professor Eduard Brückner, highly respected personalities directed the fate of society during the 19th century. In 1883, the University of Bern received the first Swiss chair for geography, initially held by Professor Eduard Petri and, from 1888, Professor Eduard Brückner. World-famous researchers were also invited to Bern and made honorary members of the society, such as Adolf Erik Nordenskjöld , Ferdinand von Richthofen , Paul Sarasin and Fritz Sarasin , Albrecht Penck , Eduard Brückner , Alfred Philippson and Sven Hedin .
