from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope (German about: Geological Commission on the Cape of Good Hope ) was the first state geological service in the area of what is now the Republic of South Africa , based in Cape Town . Their creation took place in 1895 and since that time she was the Department of Agriculture (Department Agriculture ) in the Cape Colony assumed. In 1911 the penultimate annual report appeared, from which it emerges that it now belonged to the Department of Mines  /  Department Mynwese ( Mining Department ).

Act

The Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope dealt with the geoscientific exploration of the Cape Colony and carried out scientific studies in the field of general geology , raw material exploration, mineralogy and hydrology . The results of their staff's work were published in the Commission's annual report or elsewhere. Among them was George Steuart Corstorphine , who was initially employed as a geologist from 1896 to 1899 and was its director from 1899 to 1902.

One of the main results of this institution was the start of systematic geological mapping in the Cape Colony , which, however, remained incomplete. This resulted in 17 published map sheets on a scale of 1: 238,000, with the first sheet showing the region around Cape Town appearing in 1906. The recording work was in the hands of Alexander Logie du Toit (geologist with the Commission ), Arthur William Rogers (Director 1903-1911 of the Commission ) and Ernest Hubert Lewis Schwarz. The cards were printed by Van de Sandt de Villiers Co., Ltd. in Cape Town.

John Xavier Merriman (1841-1926) served as Chairman of the Commission , who was also the last Prime Minister of the Cape Colony . Other members included Thomas Muir (Vice Chairman), Thomas Stewart, Athelstan Hall Cornish-Bowden and Francis Edgar Kanthack. This group of people was responsible for organizational and politically representative tasks.

Together with the Geological Survey of the Transvaal , the Geological Commission of the Cape of Good Hope formed the central state geological service with the designation Geological Survey of the Union of South Africa ( Geologiese Opname van Suid-Afrika ) after the founding of the South African Union from 1912 .
