A geoportal is a special web portal that enables a search for and access to digital geographic information ( geodata ) and geographic services (display, editing, analysis) via the Internet using a web browser . A Geoportal thus provides an online - Geographic Information System is (GIS) and is an expression of a Web GIS in which the web browser as GIS client acts.

Providers of geographic information such as administrations, companies or organizations use geoportals to make their geodata and metadata accessible and usable for potential users.

Definition in the legal text (Germany)

In the Federal Republic of Germany's geodata access law , the geoportal is defined in Section 3 (6) as follows:

"Geoportal is an electronic communication, transaction and interaction platform that enables access to spatial data via spatial data services and other network services."
