The specialist journal KN Journal of Cartography and Geographic Information is the joint publication organ of the German Society for Cartography eV (DGfK) , the Swiss Society for Cartography (SGK) and the Austrian Cartographic Commission (ÖKK) in the Austrian Geographical Society . It is published by the DGfK and is published by Kirschbaum Verlag , Bonn. The magazine was founded in 1951.

history

The German Society for Cartography eV (DGfK), which was founded in Bielefeld in 1950 and whose founding members included Fritz Hölzel , Theodor Stocks and Eberhard Westermann , first launched the “Kartographische Nachrichten” (KN) in 1951 as a newsletter of the DGfK. The journal quickly developed into a specialist publication organ for German cartography. In 1976 the DGfK, the ÖKK and the SGK agreed on a journalistic collaboration. Since then, the publication, which is one of the world's oldest cartography journals, has been the mouthpiece of German-language cartography. Since the 1990s, the KN has increasingly oriented itself internationally. Since 2012 it has been subtitled "Journal of Cartography and Geographic Information Science", and numerous articles appear in English. It has been published by Springer International Publishing since 2019 under the name "KN - Journal of Cartography and Geographic Information" (KNJC).

profile

The mapping technology and practice is the main theme of the publication KN. The magazine accompanies and reflects the development of information and communication technology in the field, but also looks back on its historical legacy. She sees cartography as an independent component in geographic information ( geographic information ), which provides people with spatial information about the real world using multimedia and enables them to acquire knowledge interactively. It presents the digital and analog cartographic presentation, the dynamic three-dimensional visualization of geospatial conditions and processes and the versatile use of cartographic services by business, science, administration and consumers as an expression of modern and future-oriented cartography.

As a result, the editorial concept turns to scientific principles, research and development results, methodological approaches and procedural solutions in cartography. It wants to clarify cartographic services and products in their development and application environment. It wants to show how cartographic media can facilitate spatial thinking and action by the preventive and active administration, research, teaching and education, the economy and the consumer. The map in its printed and digital, static and animated, passive and (inter) active appearance is therefore a central element of the editorial concept.

The KN subjects all submitted scientific articles to anonymous review by its editorial board, which includes well-known German, Austrian and Swiss scientists. The main categories of the CN are “Articles”, “Reports”, “Events”, “Personal” and “Reviews”. In the business section, press releases from relevant companies are evaluated and the latest developments and products are presented.

The KN is aimed at scientists, executives and practitioners in cartography and geoinformation and reaches the members of the three societies and other subscribers.
