The Swiss Society for Cartography (SGK) is an association of cartographers and those interested in cartography . The association based in Neuchâtel NE was founded in Bern in 1969. On October 25, 2019, it will celebrate its 50th anniversary

purpose

The association is dedicated to the promotion of theoretical and practical cartography as well as the further training of the relevant specialists. It disseminates knowledge and new insights in the field of map production, map application and map history and promotes the exchange of experiences with experts and institutions at home and abroad. She is committed to an internal dialogue and a rapid exchange of information.

activities

The association organizes a general meeting twice a year, combined with a subject-specific topic, as well as workshops, training courses, company and exhibition visits. The association provides information on news (newsletter) and events through various channels. It also publishes its own textbooks and country reports on cartography. She also forms working groups on cartographic topics and contacts to organizations. The association is the official representation of Switzerland in the International Cartographic Association . It participates in commissions and working groups of the ICA, sets guidelines for apprenticeship training and supplies its members with the magazine " Kartographische Nachrichten " four times a year .

The association is a member of the Swiss Organization for Geo-Information, SOGI, and of the Geomatikerin Schweiz sponsoring association.

Prix ​​Carto

Every two years the SGK awards the Prix Carto to outstanding, innovative cartographic products that stand out from the abundance of similar works and are novel and trend-setting. All cartographic products that either relate to Switzerland or were created by an applicant based in Switzerland are permitted. The products must have been published in the current or previous year. The prize is awarded in three categories:

  • Prix ​​Carto - print (print product)
  • Prix ​​Carto - digital (New Media), since 2013
  • Prix ​​Carto - start (young talent / advancement award), since 2015, since 2019 for apprentices and schoolchildren
  • Prix ​​Carto - edu (young talent / advancement award for students), since 2019
