The International Cartographic Association (IKV) ( English International Cartographic Association (ICA) , French Association Cartographique Internationale (ACI) ) is the global umbrella organization of cartographic societies and other institutions. Its aim is to promote and coordinate the further development of the cartography discipline worldwide.

The first president of the association was Eduard Imhof . Tim Trainor is currently the chairman of the ICA.

ICA Award

The ICA Awards Committee awards two awards:

  • The Carl Mannerfelt Gold Medal is an honor for cartographers who have made significant contributions to the field of cartography and is only awarded in rare cases.
  • The ICA Honorary Fellowship is an award for special services to the ICA.

Commissions and working groups

In order to coordinate the work worldwide, there are commissions and working groups that deal with a specific topic under the direction of specialists. Commissions and working groups are each appointed for four years.

ICC conference

The International Cartographic Conference (ICC) takes place every two years in one of the countries that are members of the association. The first ICC was organized in Paris in 1961 .

Barbara Petchenik Competition

Every two years the ICA organizes the Barbara Petchenik competition , a map drawing competition for children with the aim of promoting the graphic representation of the world through children's hands .
