Jonas Suyderhoef
Jonas Suyderhoef , also Jan Suyderhoef or Jonas Suyderhoff , (* around 1613 - † May 9, 1686 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch engraver who made reproductions of contemporary paintings.
life and work
Little data is known of Suyderhoef's life. He was a son of Andreas Pietersz. Suyderhoef, the secretary of the first Dutch ambassador in Constantinople and nephew of Pieter Hasselaers . The Haarlem painter and engraver Pieter Soutman is believed to be his teacher . After 1664 his name appears a few times in the directory of the Haarlem painters' guild , and in 1678 he held the office of dean there .
Suyderhoef mastered the technique of copperplate engraving perfectly and achieved almost the quality of etchings with finely graduated gray values . His reproductions based on Frans Hals stand out because of the perfection with which he could only approximate Hals' characteristic brushstroke with the use of a burin .
He was therefore in great demand among the painters of his time, as their works could then be made known only through this reproduction technique. He worked with over 50 artists, including Peter Paul Rubens , Rembrandt , Anthony van Dyck , Frans Hals , of whom he alone engraved 12 portraits, as well as Gerrit van Honthorst , Adriaen van Ostade , Joachim von Sandrart , Gerard ter Borch and Jan Lievens . Knowledge of Caravaggio's pictures , who were of great importance to the Carravagists of the Netherlands, was also promoted through his reproductions.
Around 140 engravings of his numerous reproductions have been preserved, including the engraving based on Gerard ter Borch's historical painting The Peace of Münster .
