About 400 m to the west, on Mutanabbi Street (شارع المتنبي), there is a second Greek Orthodox Church, the Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (كنيسة رئيسي الملائكة ميخائيل و جبرائيل). Two much older, but also more inconspicuous Greek Orthodox churches are even closer: just one block south of the Church of the Blessed Virgin and around 300 m northeast of the Church of St. Nicholas , and in close proximity to the latter is the Armenian Church of the Holy Mother of God . The Soufan Mosque (مسجد صوفان).

history

St. George's Cathedral at Goldschmied-Suq in the center of Latakia was built between 1936 and 1940 with donations from numerous personalities from the Greek Orthodox Church. Since then, it has been visible from afar as the largest church in the city with its three domes.

architecture

The church, made of light stone, has a rectangular floor plan. In the middle of the flat roof it has a large, ogival cupola and two smaller cupolas on the west side. A narrow edge area of the flat roof is around half a story lower around the whole building than the larger, middle area of the flat roof. The west wall has five large arched windows and two narrow arched windows close to each other on each edge.
