Gergely Kiss (water polo player)
Gergely "Geri" Kiss (born September 21, 1977 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian water polo player .
The two-meter man belongs to the generation of Hungarian water polo players who were able to build on the great successes of the 1950s from the 1990s. Since 1997 the left-hander has been a regular player in the Hungarian national team as a right winger. He was European champion in 1997 and 1999, and in 1998 he was vice world champion.
At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he was Olympic champion, in 2001 and 2003 he was third at the European Championships and in 2003 he won the world championship . In Athens at the 2004 Olympic Games , his performance was decisive for the final victory over the team from Serbia-Montenegro. He brought his team up with a hat trick in the second quarter and scored the winning goal in the last quarter. Together with Tamás Kásás he was elected to the All-Star-Team of the Olympic Games.
In 2005 he won silver at the World Cup . He was also runner-up with the team at the 2006 European Championships and 2007 World Championships , each receiving silver. At the European Championships in 2008 in Málaga (Spain), Kiss reached 3rd place with the Hungarian national team. He was also named the best player of the tournament. At the 2008 Olympic Games , the Hungarians won the final against the team from the United States. For Kiss it was the third Olympic victory in a row.
From 1997 to 2001 he played in Italy for Naples and Bologna, since 2001 he has been with BHSE Domino in Budapest, with this club he was champion in the Hungarian professional league every year from 2002 to 2006 .
Kiss is married to water polo player Anna Valkai and has two daughters. In addition to his professional career, he studies law at the University of Budapest.
