Low estimation factor (in English contempt factor ) is a term used in chess programming , which indicates an adaptation of the evaluation function to the skill level of the opponent. The function is now implemented in many chess programs. The value can be set by the operator.

While a draw against strong opponents is considered a desirable result, this result should be avoided if possible against weaker opponents. Accordingly, the most in tenths is pawns sized factor adjusted so that the program position repetitions either seeking or evading. Depending on the stage of the game, which is defined by the number of pieces remaining on the board, the factor can be chosen differently. While minor disadvantages (typically 0.25 to 0.5 pawn units) against weaker opponents can be accepted in the opening phase and the early middle game in order to avoid an early draw, the disregard factor is usually set to zero in the endgame to avoid it that the program is clearly striving for a lost position.
