history
The municipal non-profit housing company , founded in 1913, acquired a 177,000 square meter property in 1917, which at that time still belonged to the area of Cologne-Buchheim. The Germania blast furnace was located there around 1870, but was shut down after a short period of operation due to inefficiency. Under the direction of Fritz-Hans Kreis , the technical director of the housing association at the time, 18 architects planned different types of buildings, which were completed in twelve construction phases. A total of 1453 residential units and 17 shops were built - making the Germania settlement the largest residential area in Germany in 1928.
