Germans to America

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Germans to America is a collection of data on immigrants to the USA from the years 1850 to 1888. It is available in book form, on CD-ROM and as an online database ( German Emigrant Database , DAD for short). The editors are Ira A. Glazier and P. William Filby .

The book edition comprises over 63 volumes, each with around 70,000 names. In total, there are around 3.5 million data records.

Investigations by the research center for emigrants to the USA at the University of Oldenburg in 2000 and 2001 also led to critical comments. For example, wrongly spelled family names, the deletion of the passengers' places of origin, incorrect assignment of nationalities or the lack of the arrival ports on the CD-ROM edition are criticized. In addition, entire passenger lists are missing from the database.

There are also direct, free resources for emigration research .
