Society for responsibility in science

The Society for Responsibility in Science is the German-speaking branch of the Society for Social Responsibility in Science (SSRS) founded in 1945 by Viktor Paschkis in the USA in response to the atomic bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki .

Its members are primarily natural scientists, physicians and engineers who undertake not to do anything against their conscience in their work and to strictly adhere to professional ethics . GVS was founded in 1966.

According to the statutes, its members are obliged to:

  • personally to bear the moral responsibility for the consequences of their work and not to leave them to the superiors alone, and
  • With their scientific and technical knowledge to help the authorities, the economy and the layperson to use the resources of science and technology in a humane way, as well as to optimize society and environmental responsibility in a rational and ideology-free manner.

Society awards the Max Born Medal for Responsibility in Science .
